Dear Soul,
In these days still under the influence of the Fire Element, before entering the period of Beltane, I want to share with you the story of the Flame of Avalon:
In the 2004 Glastonbury Goddess Conference we created Nolava's Flame of Avalon as a perpetual flame of Goddess burning in the world. We brought six flames together, which included the Goddess Conference Flame which had been lit from the sun and burned throughout the Conference; Brigid's Flame brought to the Conference by Sister Mary and Sister Rita from Kildare in Ireland; the Hiroshima Peace Flame lit by a woman survivor from the burning embers after the nuclear bomb exploded, and kept alight for more than 70 years, brought to the Conference by Aine Carey; Bridie's Flame from Lewis in the Hebrides brought by Jill Smith; the Children's Flame brought from America by Kay Cooksey; and the Madonna Ministry Flame brought by Koko Newport.
Since then many other flames from other Goddess Temples, events and landscapes, have been added into the Flame of Avalon, which has been burning continuously for 21 years. The Flame is kept alight by a circle of about 30 priestesses who each hold the Flame alight, one day at a time, from dusk on one day to dusk on the next, in a perpetual circle. The idea is that the Flame is held in the wick of a candle and comes alive when it is lit. The Flame is the renewing Flame of the Lady alive in the world, sharing Her Light and Love to all who are in need of Her presence. Anyone can take the Flame from candles in the Goddess Temple lit from the Flame of Avalon, lighting their own and others candles from Her Flame, taking Her out into the world.
I hope you enjoyed discovering this piece of the history of our Temple.
With blessings,
The Glastonbury Goddess Temple
I’m looking forward to seeing Jill Smith at Calanais for the Lunar standstill in June… very close to summer solstice and the peak of Sol’s fire in the wheel of the year for me.
